Tamil Nadu: Work begins on translating ancient Bengali Vaishnava songs into Tamil.

Tamil Nadu: In a significant step towards preserving and disseminating ancient Indian literature, the Central Institute of Classical Tamil has initiated the translation of ancient Bengali Vaishnava devotional literature into Tamil. This project is being undertaken in collaboration with Visva-Bharati University.

Under this project, ancient Bengali texts and devotional songs known as “Vaishnava Padavali” are being rendered into classical Tamil. I. Chandrasekharan, the Director of the Institute, announced details regarding this initiative in a press release on Friday.

This project represents a collaborative effort—both scholarly and cultural—between two prominent institutions. Such inter-linguistic studies are being promoted with the support of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The initiative commenced with a national workshop held at the Visva-Bharati University campus in Santiniketan. The workshop is scheduled to run for 15 days, from June 19 to July 3. During this period, detailed discussions will be held on various translation techniques, linguistic structures, and cultural contexts relevant to ancient Bengali Vaishnava devotional literature.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by the university’s Registrar, Bikash Mukhopadhyay. Professor D. Umadevi from the Department of Indian Languages and Literary Studies at the University of Delhi attended the event as a special invitee. The program saw participation from the Principal of the Institute of Language, Literature, and Culture, professors from various departments, researchers, and a large number of students.

Visva-Bharati University is recognized as a premier center for education and research in Asia, fostering multilingual education and cultural exchange. This initiative marks a significant effort to further that tradition.

The objective of this project extends beyond mere translation; it aims to preserve ancient Indian devotional literature and make it accessible across different languages. It will also foster dialogue and mutual understanding between the Tamil and Bengali literary traditions.

According to the organizers, such academic activities play a crucial role in uniting India’s cultural diversity and creating new avenues for research in the field of linguistic studies.
