Unity in Tamil Nadu Assembly on Mekedatu Dam proposal, leaders gave support
Tamil Nadu: The resolution passed in the Legislative Assembly against the Mekedatu dam has sparked widespread discussion in state politics. On Friday, leaders from various political parties welcomed the resolution, describing it as a crucial decision regarding the state’s water rights.
The resolution was passed unanimously by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, with legislators from all parties uniting in its support. A rare political consensus was witnessed between the ruling party and the opposition regarding this matter.
Communist Party of India leader M. Veerapandian stated that the Central Government should not grant approval to the Mekedatu dam project. He hailed the unanimous passage of the resolution as a positive example of the democratic process and commended the government as well as the supporting legislators.
T.T.V. Dhinakaran of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) remarked that merely passing a resolution is not enough; concrete steps must be taken to implement it effectively. He urged Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to maintain continuous pressure on the Central Government regarding this issue.
G.K. Vasan, chief of the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), stated that the Tamil Nadu government’s stance against the Mekedatu dam reflects the sentiments of the state’s people and farmers. He described it as an issue concerning the protection of the state’s water rights.
Actor and leader of the Manithaneya Makkal Iyakkam (MMI), Kamal Haasan, also supported the resolution, noting that the unity displayed by legislators from all parties in the Assembly was commendable. He emphasized that this issue is not merely political but is directly linked to Tamil Nadu’s water rights and the livelihoods of its farmers.
A long-standing dispute exists between Tamil Nadu and neighboring states regarding the Mekedatu project. The project has faced persistent opposition at both political and social levels within the state. Against this backdrop, the resolution passed by the Assembly is considered significant. According to political analysts, the unity among all parties on this issue indicates that a collective stance is being adopted in the state regarding water resources, transcending political differences. It is also believed that this issue will remain a key subject of dialogue between the Centre and the state in the near future.
