New elevated-tunnel corridor to be built in Dehradun, people going to Mussoorie will get alternative route

Dehradun. Preparations for another big project have started in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, to improve the traffic system and reduce the increasing pressure within the city. To connect Rispana and Bindal elevated projects, a plan is being worked on to build a new elevated-tunnel corridor from Max Hospital on Rajpur Road to Dhoran. After the completion of this project, the city will get a new alternative route and tourists going towards Mussoorie can proceed without entering the interior parts of Dehradun.
The proposed corridor is considered important for the future traffic needs of Dehradun. The pressure on major roads increases due to the ever-increasing population, number of vehicles in the city and additional traffic during the tourist season. Especially on Rajpur Road and Mussoorie Road, due to the movement of tourists, there is often a long traffic jam. Creation of new corridors can help in reducing this pressure.
According to the plan, work is being done on the possibility of preparing an elevated and tunnel based route from Max Hospital on Rajpur Road to Dhoran. This corridor will be connected to Rispana and Bindal elevated projects. With this, vehicles coming from different parts of the city will be able to move towards Mussoorie Road through a dedicated route.
The biggest benefit of this system can be availed by those tourists who go to Mussoorie via Dehradun. At present vehicles coming from outside areas have to pass through the city, leading to increased traffic at major intersections and roads. After the new corridor is ready, tourists will be able to move forward without coming to the busy areas of the city.
The number of vehicles traveling to Mussoorie increases significantly during weekends, holidays and tourist season in Dehradun. Due to this, traffic pressure increases in Rajpur Road, Dilaram Chowk and surrounding areas. Local people also face problems in daily commuting. In such a situation, the proposed elevated-tunnel corridor can also play an important role in providing relief to local traffic.
Rispana and Bindal elevated projects are already among the important plans towards redesigning the city’s transport system. Creating a new corridor to connect both the projects can create an integrated road network in the city. This will facilitate operation of long distance and local traffic in different directions.
Both elevated road and tunnel are planned to be used in the proposed project. Its objective is to create a route that does not put additional pressure on existing roads and densely populated areas. Considering the hilly geography and the existing structure of the city, a combination of tunnel and elevated section is considered useful.
Further detailed survey, technical study and possible route for the project will be determined. Construction costs, land requirements, environmental aspects and impact on traffic can then be assessed. The final form of the scheme will be decided only after the detailed project report is prepared.
The number of vehicles in Dehradun has increased rapidly in the last few years. The roads in the older parts of the city are of limited width and there is dense population around them. In such a situation, road widening is not possible everywhere. For this reason, there is increasing emphasis on options like elevated roads and tunnels.
The construction of the new corridor can benefit not only the tourists visiting Mussoorie, but also the people traveling between different areas of the city. This can reduce the number of vehicles on existing main routes and also reduce travel time.
Through the project, an attempt is made to create a strong option for traffic diversion in the city. If there is excessive pressure or traffic disruption on any main route, the new corridor can be used as an alternative route.
Mussoorie is one of the major tourist destinations of Uttarakhand and every year a large number of tourists reach there via Dehradun. Vehicle congestion during the tourist season also affects the normal traffic system of Dehradun. To find a permanent solution to this problem, the arrangement to transport vehicles from outside the city to Mussoorie route is being considered important.
At present, the plan for the proposed elevated-tunnel corridor from Max Hospital to Dhoran is in the preliminary preparation stage. Steps towards construction will be taken after completion of further technical studies and other processes. With the implementation of the project, Dehradun will get a new alternative transport route and the journey of tourists going to Mussoorie can also become easier.
