Punjab Police busts cross-border smuggling racket, seizes 6 kg heroin
Chandigarh (IANS). The Punjab Police has busted a cross-border drug smuggling ring by arresting a man and recovering six kg of heroin and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash from drug proceeds from his possession. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav gave this information here on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Shinder Singh, a resident of Jalandhar. He already has two criminal cases registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
DGP Yadav said that the Amritsar State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) had received information that the accused and his associates had recently seized a large consignment of heroin sent to Indian territory by Pakistan-based smugglers and agencies using the riverine route in Ferozepur sector. Had bought Information was received that this consignment is around Amritsar which they are going to give to someone.
“Swiftly acting, the Special Police Team of SSOC Amritsar launched an operation and cordoned off the area in a planned manner, as a result of which accused Shinder Singh was arrested,” he added.
AIG SSOC Sukhminder Singh Mann said that it has been learned that Pakistan-based smugglers have taken advantage of the gap created by flood in the fence along the river bank to smuggle the drug consignment.
He said that further investigation is on to unearth the entire network of drug suppliers, dealers and their buyers. He said that with the arrest of the remaining members of this group, their back and forth links are being probed to take the investigation to its logical conclusion.
