Indian-origin doctor fined for removing cyst instead of kidney
New York (IANS). A case of gross negligence has come to light from the American state of Florida. An Indian-origin urologist removed a man’s cyst instead of a kidney during a surgery. The doctor has been fined $7,236 for negligence in this surgery in 2021.
According to the Miami Herald report, Indian-origin urologist Jamip Patel had to remove a patient’s right kidney on June 16, 2021, but he removed the patient’s cyst. Which was sent to pathology for examination.
A complaint filed with the Florida Department of Health states that a pathology report two days later said Patel had removed a cyst instead of a kidney.
The patient was not told about this mistake, he remained in pain for two months. The complaint states that a CT scan revealed that the patient’s right kidney was still present. Patel has refused to say anything in this matter.
In addition to a $5,000 fine, the Florida Department of Health has ordered Patel to lecture in medical education courses along with $2,236 spent on the investigation.
Patel was accredited with the American Board of Urology in 2013. He was licensed to operate in Florida on 25 February 2011.
A similar case came to light in June 2022 in which Indian-origin urologist Dilip Kumar Patel (72) wrongly sterilized his 51-year-old patient.
