People upset due to heavy rains in Hyderabad, normal life disrupted and roads filled with water

Hyderabad (IANS). Heavy rains in Hyderabad and suburbs early Tuesday left many colonies inundated and normal life disrupted. Not only this, the effect of rain was also visible on traffic.

Low-lying residential areas and areas near lakes and storm drains were flooded. Colonies were submerged due to overflowing of drains. In some areas, flood water entered houses, destroying household articles and causing great hardship to the people.

The authorities declared holiday in all educational institutions after heavy rains and in view of the forecast of rain.

Due to heavy rains, roads were submerged in many areas, severely affecting vehicular movement in usually busy areas. People going to offices and workplaces got stuck in traffic jams.

Due to water logging, there was a long traffic jam on the flyover and the road connecting Toli Chowki to IT hub HITEC City and Gachibowli.

Similar scenes were witnessed on Kukatpally-Moosapet and Erragadda-Moosapet roads.

Cyberabad Police asked IT employees to opt for going home from work. Also urged the citizens to take all precautions in view of the forecast of heavy rains. There was a heavy traffic jam under the Moosapet metro station, while water from the Kukatpally drain flooded the main road.

Vehicular movement was severely affected on the Punjagutta-Kukatpally road, one of the busiest traffic routes in the city. Traffic also came to a halt between Ameerpet and Begumpet.

The authorities deployed JCBs to rescue the stranded students in hostels of various engineering colleges in Maisammaguda area. Hostels of Mallareddy, St Peter’s and Narasimha Reddy colleges have been flooded.

Colonies in areas like Chintal, Uppal, Begumpet, Toli Chowki, Kukatpally, Bowenpally and Gundlapochampally were inundated. Roads were submerged in Srinivas Nagar of Chintal due to the water of Fox Sagar.

Residents complained that water entered their houses at around 3 am, damaging household items.

He accused the municipal officials and local public representatives of negligence. A woman said that politicians have no right to seek votes in the upcoming elections without addressing the persistent problem of waterlogging.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued an alert. In this, people have been appealed not to come out of their homes unless necessary. Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams are clearing water logged and fallen trees in various parts of the city.

The GHMC commissioner said that due to incessant rains in the city, the staff is on high alert. They were clearing clogged areas and monitoring sewer flow.

Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Vijayalakshmi Gadwal inspected water-logging near Balkampet Bridge.

He directed the Zonal Commissioner and DRF teams to clear the water-logging immediately. He requested citizens to travel only in case of emergency and exercise utmost caution while travelling.

Pickett drain is in spate in Begumpet, due to which roads and residential areas have been submerged. Allamtota Bai area was submerged. Begumpet-Balkampet underpass was completely submerged.

The city received 10-14 cm rainfall since morning. Maximum rainfall was 14 cm in Miyapur, 12.73 cm in Kukatpally, 11.98 cm in Rajendranagar, 11.9 cm in Shaikpet and 11.68 cm in Khairatabad.

Meanwhile, Minister of State T Srinivas Yadav directed GHMC officials to remain alert to minimize inconvenience to the people. People can contact GHMC control room at 21111111, 23225397 for any emergency.

The minister has asked officials to closely monitor the water level in Hussain Sagar lake and Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs and flow into storm water drains.
