Pramila Mallik becomes first woman speaker of Odisha Assembly
Bhubaneswar: History has been created on Friday as Pramila Mallik has become the first woman speaker of Odisha Assembly.All the senior leaders of all the three parties namely BJD, BJP and Congress welcomed the speaker and congratulated her on becoming the first ever woman speaker of Odisha Assembly.According to reports, the former Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management had resigned from her post on Thursday. Following this, she filed her nomination papers for the post of Speaker of the Odisha Assembly.The Odisha ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on September 20 named senior party leader and Binjharpur MLA Pramila Mallik as its candidate for the election of the Assembly Speaker.Election for the Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker was scheduled to be held on September 22. Pramila Mallik has been declared the first ever woman Speaker of the Odisha Assembly. She was uncontested for the post.
The six-time MLA had contested the State assembly election for the first time in 1990 on a Janata Dal ticket. Later, she won the elections in 2000, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 on the BJD ticket.“I am grateful to honourable Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for reposing faith in women and selecting me as the first woman candidate for the Odisha Assembly Speaker election. I will try my best to run the Assembly in an impartial manner by taking everybody or every party together,” said Mallik in her reaction. She will file her nomination papers for the Assembly Speaker election today, that is on Thursday.The upcoming Monsoon session of Odisha Legislative Assembly will begin from September 22, it will continue till October 4. The Odisha Assembly Speaker election will take place on September 22, said reliable reports on Thursday (today)According to reliable reports, the nomination filing is scheduled to be held on September 21. It is worth mentioning that the post of Speaker of the Odisha Assembly has been vacant after the resignation of Bikram Keshari Arukha.
