Horse riding became an Olympic sport in 1900. This game was included in the Asian Games program in 1982. Japan has dominated the sport at the Asian Games over the past few years, winning 43 medals, including 18 gold. Korea has 15 gold medals. India had earlier won three gold medals, three silver medals and six bronze medals in horse riding at the Asian Games (i.e. 12 medals in total). All three gold medals for India in horse riding came in Delhi 1982. Raghubir Singh, who became champion in the individual event in that edition. He also won the gold medal in the team event with Ghulam Mohammad Khan, Bishal Singh and Milkha Singh. Rupinder Singh Brar won the gold medal in individual tent pegging, a category only in the Asian Games in that edition. At Jakarta 2018, Olympian Fawad Mirza won a silver medal in the individual event. The quartet of Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Malik, Jitender Singh and Fawad Mirza also finished second on the podium in the team event category. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has congratulated the team that won the gold medal in the team event of horse riding.
