Washington: The Republican-majority US House of Representatives in the US has passed a bill to provide $14.3 billion in aid to Israel. The bill passed on Thursday by a vote of 226 versus 196, with two Republicans opposing the legislation and 12 Democrats supporting it, CNN reports.
However, passage of the bill would create divisions in both houses of Congress as there is bipartisan support for aid to Israel and further aid to Ukraine in the Democrat-led Senate, but in the House, many Republicans oppose sending more aid. Have done. Kyiv.
Democrats have objected to the House bill because it does not include aid to Ukraine and it would cut funding for the Internal Revenue Service.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the Republican legislation a “deeply flawed proposal” that the Senate will not consider.
“The hypocrisy here is that by cutting funding after tax fraud, (it) will actually increase the deficit by billions and billions of dollars. What a joke,” CNN quoted Schumer as telling the media Thursday night.
“We will work together on our own bipartisan emergency aid package that includes aid to Israel, Ukraine, competition with the Chinese government, and humanitarian assistance to Gaza.”
Meanwhile, newly appointed House Speaker Republican Mike Johnson pledged to pass a Ukraine aid package after the deal with Israel.
“Ukraine will come in a short time, it will come next… And you heard me say that we want to link border security with Ukraine… If we are going to take care of a border in Ukraine, we have to There will be a need to take care of the US border as well,” he said in reference to the need for strict border security provisions in the US.
Thursday’s developments come as the November 17 deadline approaches when government funding is set to expire.
