Mattu Gulla trade picks up as crop enters market
UDUPI: The renowned and Geographical Indication (GI)-certified Mattu Gulla, a distinct round-shaped brinjal variety known for its unparalleled taste, has flooded the local markets. Mattu Gulla has gained popularity and is now readily available in most vegetable markets within Udupi district and even in the neighboring DK district.
Sources from the Mattu Gulla Growers’ Association report that approximately two tonnes of this unique brinjal variety are being sold daily in the market. This year’s bountiful yield can be attributed to the absence of excessive rainfall and floods. However, the current market price of Rs 90 per kilogram may not be as rewarding for the growers. In July this year, Mattu Gulla was selling at a higher price of Rs 180 per kilogram, but an increase in supply due to the abundant yield, along with demand-supply dynamics, has led to a reduction in the price. Nevertheless, the growers remain optimistic.
Laxman Mattu, a farmer in Mattu village, noted that Mattu Gulla has recently made its way into markets in Bengaluru and Mumbai. He believes that the current supply-demand mismatch will not persist for long. To ensure authenticity, buyers are advised to look for the Mattu Gulla with a distinctive sticker bearing the logo that reads ‘Mattu Gulla Belegarara Sangha.’
Sunil D Bangera, the president of the Mattu Gulla Growers’ Association, stated that this year’s yield is higher compared to recent years, and there is a healthy demand for the product. Many customers have recognized its soft pulp and unique flavor, which has contributed to its popularity.
