Girl climbs mobile tower to persuade young man to marry her

Gorakhpur: A 20-year-old woman climbed a mobile tower in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district to profess her love for a man and convince him to marry her, police said on Friday.

A large number of people gathered near the 50 meter high tower to watch the incident, causing a traffic jam on the nearby highway, forcing the police to take crowd control measures.

Many in the crowd recorded the incident on their mobile phones as it reminded them of Veeru (Dharmendra) professing his love for Basanti (Hema Malini) on the overhead water tank in the film Sholay.

“The woman climbed the mobile tower near Semra Raja toll plaza area of Maharajganj district on Thursday. She was having an affair with a local youth (24) for the last few years and wanted to convince him and his family members for marriage ” Area Officer (CO) Ajay Singh Chauhan said.

“We first tried to persuade the woman to come down. However, when she refused to do so, a constable climbed the tower and made her come down,” the CO said.

Police said the truck driver had gone to Nepal to deliver a consignment and a case has been registered under IPC section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).
