Banks will remain closed for several days in October; complete important tasks before the holidays.
New Delhi. In October 2026, customers doing important work related to the bank will have to plan in advance by looking at the holiday calendar. Due to the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India and local holidays applicable in different states, bank branches will remain closed for several days in October. These include Gandhi Jayanti, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti and other regional festivals, as well as holidays on Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays of the month. However, all the holidays will not be applicable simultaneously across the country and the dates of bank closure will vary according to the state and banking circle.
Banks will remain closed across the country in the beginning of October on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October. After this, there will be holidays according to the festivals in different states. There will be a holiday in some banking centers on October 10 due to Mahalaya Amavasya. This date is also the second Saturday of the month, hence regular Saturday holiday will also be applicable in banks across the country.
Due to Durga Puja and Dussehra, there may be a situation of continuous bank closure in many states in the third week of October. Banks will remain closed in Agartala on 17th October due to Maha Saptami. Bank branches will remain closed in many cities on October 19 due to festivals like Durga Puja, Maha Ashtami, Mahanavami and Ayudha Puja. These include banking centers like Agartala, Aizawl, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi and Shillong.
On October 20, there will be a holiday in most of the banking centers of the country on the occasion of Dussehra and Vijayadashami. In different states, this day is a holiday in the name of Dussehra, Vijayadashami, Mahanavami or Durga Puja. Bank branches in Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and many other states are also likely to remain closed on this date.
After this, there will be a holiday related to Durga Puja and Vijayadashami in many states on 21st October also. Banks will remain closed in centers like Agartala, Bengaluru, Gangtok, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram. There will be bank holiday in Sikkim on 22nd and 23rd October due to Durga Puja. In this way, the functioning of bank branches may be affected for several consecutive days in some parts of North-East and Eastern India.
Even on October 26, banks will remain closed on different occasions in some states. There will be a holiday on account of Lakshmi Puja in Agartala, Accession Day in Jammu and Kashmir and Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti in some banking centers of Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Apart from this, there will be a bank holiday in Himachal Pradesh on 29th October on the occasion of Karva Chauth.
Banks will remain closed in some banking centers of Gujarat on October 31 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Apart from this, there will be regular bank holidays on all Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays of the month. In October 2026, the second Saturday will fall on October 10 and the fourth Saturday will fall on October 24.
It is important for bank customers to understand that by adding holidays of different states, banks may remain closed at some places on many dates in the month, but this does not mean that banks in any one state will remain closed for 16 consecutive days. The number of holidays will depend on the respective state, city and local festivals. Therefore, customers should plan to visit the branch only after seeing the bank holiday calendar of their state.
According to the calendar available in Chhattisgarh, there will be a bank holiday on October 2 due to Gandhi Jayanti and October 20 due to Vijayadashami. Apart from these, there will also be regular holidays on Sunday and second and fourth Saturday. Similarly, weekly holidays will be implemented in Delhi along with the main festival holidays of October 2 and October 20. In Uttar Pradesh also, banks will remain closed due to Gandhi Jayanti and Vijayadashami.
Despite bank branches remaining closed, most digital banking services remain available as usual. Customers will be able to transact through UPI, Internet Banking, Mobile Banking, ATM and many other digital means. However, it may be necessary for the bank to be open for check clearance, bank draft, large cash transactions, document submission, loan related transactions, KYC updates and other branch based services.
For this reason, those customers who have to visit the bank branch in October to submit necessary documents, do check related work, operate locker or complete any loan and account related process, it would be better to complete their work before the holidays.
Due to the festive season, the crowd of customers in bank branches may increase compared to normal days in October. Areas with frequent holidays around Durga Puja and Dussehra may see additional crowd on weekdays before and after the holiday.
Therefore, the safest way would be to confirm the leave from the local branch before doing any bank related work in October. Due to difference in festival dates and local holidays in different states, banks across the country will not remain closed on the same day. Customers should plan only after looking at the bank holiday calendar according to their city and state.
