A lump had formed inside the heart, Mekahara’s doctors gave it new life
Raipur: Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Head of the Department of Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery, Advanced Cardiac Institute, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, successfully removed a rare cancerous tumor of the heart located in the left atrium, one of the four chambers in the heart of a patient. Saved his life by performing an operation. To remove this tumor of about 140 grams, the patient’s heart was completely closed and the tumor was removed through operation with the help of a bypass machine. Today, seven days after the operation, this patient was discharged and went home. Before reaching ACI, the patient was having trouble breathing for a year and was undergoing treatment for cough.
A 50-year-old man from Gunderdehi came to the cardiac surgery OPD of ACI complaining of breathlessness. The patient was complaining of shortness of breath and cough for the last one year and had started feeling very short of breath since last 2 months due to which the patient had to be admitted to the ICU of a private hospital. There the reason given was the failure of the heart valves. On examination by Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery in OPD, it was found that there was a tumor or lump inside his heart and it was advised to do the operation immediately. When the patient came to know that there was a tumor inside the heart, he could not believe it. The patient was not able to understand that a tumor could also occur inside the chamber of the heart.
Dr. Sahu told that there are 4 chambers in the human heart: – Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle. The entire tumor has spread inside the patient’s left atrium and is also crossing the mitral valve and entering the left ventricle. In such a situation, the operation has to be done quickly because there is a danger of the valve getting closed (choked) at any time. If the valve gets choked, the patient may die immediately. Such patients are also at risk of paralysis because small pieces come out of the tumor and block the nerves of the brain, which can lead to paralysis. Or due to blockage in the veins of the hands and feet, gangrene may occur in the hands and feet.
