AAP: Swati Maliwal resigns from the post of DCW chief

New Delhi: Swati Maliwal on Friday resigned from the post of Delhi Commission for Women chief after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made her its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The decision to nominate Swati Maliwal, known for her advocacy of women’s rights, will mark her debut in parliamentary affairs. Taking to X, she shared a video and captioned it with a line from the famous song from the Bollywood movie ‘Kabhi Kabhie’. “Pal do pal is my story… Today with tears in my eyes I said goodbye to Delhi Women Commission.

I don’t understand how 8 years passed here with the panel.” He said, “While living here, I have seen many ups and downs.

I dedicated every day to the welfare of Delhi and the country. The fight is not over, this is just the beginning.” AAP’s Political Affairs Committee on Friday finalized its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections to be held in Delhi on January 19.

The committee nominated Maliwal as its candidate for the first time and re-nominated ND Gupta and jailed leader Sanjay Singh for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.

The committee, headed by AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, decided to support the two sitting members for re-nomination, while Sushil Kumar Gupta expressed his intention to focus on electoral politics of Haryana.

ND Gupta is the treasurer of the party and Sushil Gupta is the president of AAP’s Haryana unit. Elections are expected to be held in the state later this year.
“DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal has been nominated for the first time.

The PAC has decided to continue Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta as Rajya Sabha members for their second term, the party said.
With the six-year tenure of three Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi ending this month, voting to elect new members will be held on January 19.
Three members – Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta and Narayan Das Gupta – will retire on January 27.

Swati Maliwal is a women’s rights activist and the current chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). Before joining DCW, Maliwal worked as an advisor to the Chief Minister of Delhi on public grievances. Maliwal was a prominent member of the Indian Against Corruption movement.

Maliwal has been associated with various campaigns and movements aimed at combating violence against women, advocating for stricter laws, and promoting gender equality.

Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Thursday allowed party leader Sanjay Singh to sign re-nomination documents from jail. Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh is an accused in a money laundering case related to the excise policy matter and was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4, 2023.

His bail plea was rejected by the trial court on December 22, 2023, saying that the court prima facie believes that the case against him is genuine. The evidence points to their involvement in the alleged crime of money laundering. “There are reasonable grounds to believe that he is guilty of the alleged offense of money laundering.”
