Adani Group expands internationally, signs 5,000 MW hydro project in Bhutan

Guwahati: Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, has joined Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) as a founding member, the GMC Authority announced on Saturday.
In an official statement, the GMC Authority said Adani’s involvement reflects a shared commitment to Bhutan’s values-based development model.
It noted that his long experience in building large infrastructure projects across sectors such as energy, logistics, connectivity, and renewable systems aligns with GMC’s goal of developing modern infrastructure while protecting natural resources and human well-being.
Gelephu Mindfulness City is an initiative envisioned by Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
The project aims to create a global centre that promotes mindfulness, sustainability, and prosperity at a time of growing global uncertainty.
GMC seeks to present an alternative development model that blends Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural traditions with innovation, technology, and economic growth.
The King has repeatedly stressed that development should be guided by strong values rather than scale alone.
He has stated that true progress lies in maintaining balance between people, nature, and time, an idea that forms the foundation of GMC’s long-term development strategy.
In a social media post, the GMC Authority highlighted Adani’s more than 30 years of experience in developing, financing, and operating major infrastructure projects across energy, ports, logistics, and transportation.
It added that his leadership in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure matches Bhutan’s focus on environmental protection and climate responsibility.
The announcement also builds on the growing partnership between Bhutan and the Adani Group. This includes a major collaboration with Druk Green Power Corporation to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.
A memorandum of understanding for this project was signed between Druk Green Power Corporation Limited and Adani Power Limited at Tashichhodzong on the same day.
Reacting to the development, Gautam Adani said Bhutan has demonstrated how value-driven development can create lasting strength.
He described Gelephu Mindfulness City as a timely and meaningful initiative that places people, nature, and long-term thinking at the centre of progress.
Adani said he felt honoured to become a founding member of GMC, calling it a visionary project of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck that reflects Bhutan’s commitment to mindful and sustainable growth.
He also noted that important steps were taken to strengthen the energy partnership, including the signing of the 5,000 MW hydropower MoU and the official start of the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project.
Adani further expressed his appreciation for the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay, at the event, and said the partnership would continue to grow based on sustainability, trust, and long-term value.
