Airport Customs tutor hid gold worth Rs 1.21 crore in cardboard box and mixer grinder
Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Airport Customs has arrested a city-based man, who had come from Jeddah, for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.21 crore. The accused, who works as a tutor, had cleverly hidden the drug in a cardboard box and a mixer grinder.

On the basis of screening, the accused was stopped at the international airport on Friday. Following this, the officials decided to personally search him and examine his luggage. Four cut pieces of gold weighing 1,998 grams, worth Rs 1,10,99,630 and two gold bangles, weighing about 200 grams, worth Rs 10,18,500 were seized in the operation.
While the gold bangles were hidden in a cardboard box carried as check-in baggage, the cut pieces of gold were hidden inside a mixer grinder, which was also kept inside a cardboard box. The statement of the accused was recorded in which he admitted to keeping, hiding and not disclosing the seized items.
The accused was arrested on Saturday
“The passenger has admitted that he was involved in smuggling operations in exchange for monetary consideration. Accordingly, he was arrested on Saturday,” said a customs official.
