Alauddin Khilji dynasty’s tunnel found in excavation for road construction
New Delhi. The Archaeological Survey of India has found a secret tunnel dating back to the 13th or 14th century near the Children’s Museum near Siri Fort, Delhi. Giving information about the tunnel, the Archaeological Survey of India said that this tunnel was built during the Khilji dynasty. Giving information, the ASI said that this intelligence tunnel has been detected during the excavation on the way near Siri Fort. According to the ASI, a temporary road was being built to connect the front gate with the main road for the convenience of commuters and excavation was being done on this route. During the excavation, a tunnel with an arched structure was suddenly discovered. Explaining further, he said that, as soon as we saw the front part of the tunnel with arched structure, we stopped digging.

Officials further informed that no further excavation will be done in this area and the structure will be kept as it is. Explaining further, he said that the front part of this tunnel is quite shocking and that is why we have left it for the beholders. Talking about the tunnel, officials said that the kind of tunnel being built today, big machines are used to make it. Superintending Archaeologist of ASI Delhi Circle Praveen Singh told that we were making a four meter wide path from the front gate to the main road and during this time we saw this arched structure. Officials said they are not aware of the direction in which the tunnel-like structure leads. Senior officials have been informed about the discovery and further excavation will be done after getting clearance from higher authorities. Officials said that the tunnel-like structure is present on a mound which is at a height of about one meter from the ground. Officials said that during the construction of the children’s museum, many remains of pottery were found in the same area, which also belong to the Khilji dynasty period. According to the ASI, a temporary road was being constructed to connect the front gate with the main road for the convenience of the visitors and excavation was being done along this route. During the excavation, a tunnel with an arched structure was suddenly discovered. Explaining further, he said that, we stopped the digging as soon as we saw the front part of the tunnel with arched structure.
