Amarnath Yatra: Woman pilgrim dies after being hit by stones falling from hill
Srinagar. A woman pilgrim was killed and two personnel of the Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were injured when stones fell on them at the Sangam top of the Amarnath pilgrimage route in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Officials gave this information on Sunday. The deceased pilgrim has been identified as Urmilaben (53), daughter of Lakshmi Narayan, who was seriously injured when a stone fell between the Sangam top and the lower cave on the Amarnath route.
Both members of the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s two-member Mountain Rescue Team, (MRT) consisting of Senior Grade Constables Mohd Salem and Mohd Yasin, who were trying to rescue the injured woman, were also seriously injured during the operation. The injured woman pilgrim later succumbed to her injuries, he said. The injured police personnel on tour duty were airlifted by a private helicopter from the Army side.
The Amarnath Yatra was temporarily suspended on Sunday due to bad weather. No pilgrim was allowed to proceed towards the cave shrine from Nunwan and Baltal base camps due to slippery conditions amid rains at many places along the route. Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh has condoled the death of the pilgrim and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family. The DGP appreciated the commitment of both the policemen and thanked all those involved in the speedy evacuation. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the jawans.
