Imphal: Armed robbers with their faces covered in masks looted Rs 18.80 crore in cash from a branch of a public sector bank in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. This branch of Punjab National Bank is the currency chest for Ukhrul district, where the Reserve Bank of India stocks cash for banks and ATMs.
On Thursday evening, robbers armed with sophisticated weapons reached the bank in Ukhrul town, about 80 km from state capital Imphal, overpowered the security personnel and looted money from the safe after threatening the staff.
Officials said masked miscreants locked the employees and security personnel inside the toilet of the bank.
Safe opened at gunpoint
One of the senior employees was asked at gunpoint to open the safe, following which the robbers made away with the money.
