Assam: Fake doctor practicing illegal medicine in Dhubri arrested by police

Guwahati: In a major crackdown on medical fraud in Assam, a team led by the Officer-in-Charge of Dhubri Police Station arrested a man posing as a doctor despite having no valid medical degree or registration.

The arrest followed credible inputs that the accused had been treating patients illegally, thereby putting public lives at serious risk.

According to an official post shared by Dhubri Police on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday evening, the accused was “playing with lives without a valid degree or registration.” The police action highlights growing concerns over unqualified individuals operating as doctors, particularly in vulnerable areas where patients often lack access to verified healthcare facilities.

In their message, the police issued a strong public advisory stating, “Your health is not a gamble. Always verify a doctor’s credentials before treatment. Stay alert, stay safe!” The post also tagged the Chief Minister’s Office Assam, Assam Police, and senior officials, underlining the seriousness of the offence.

Sources indicated that the accused had been offering medical treatment while falsely presenting himself as a qualified practitioner.

Such acts not only violate medical and legal norms but also pose grave threats to patient safety, as improper diagnosis and treatment can lead to severe complications or even death.

Medical experts have repeatedly warned that treatment by unqualified practitioners can result in misuse of medicines, delayed proper care, and irreversible harm.

The incident underscores the importance of public awareness and effective monitoring of healthcare practices at the grassroots level.

Police have initiated further investigation to ascertain how long the accused had been operating, the number of patients affected, and whether any network was involved.

Legal action will be pursued under relevant sections of the law.

Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious medical practices and to verify doctors through official medical council registrations before seeking treatment.
