Assam: Ghograpar Inspector Biman Roy sent to four-day police custody

Guwahati. A trial court in Assam’s Nalbari district sentenced Biman Roy, the disgraced officer-in-charge of Ghograpar police station, to four days in police jail on Friday. The police sought five days’ custody of Roy when he was brought before the Additional District and Sessions Judge in Nalbari in connection with a complaint made against the OC for taking nude photographs of a young girl inside the police station. Roy was shifted from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to Nalbari on Thursday after it was determined that his health was stable. He fled the spot as soon as the woman lodged a complaint against him; However, he was later found unconscious by the police near the Panikheti railway station, and was later brought to the GMCH. The incident first came to light on June 26 when a young girl complained to the police about a police officer saying he had taken obscene pictures of her and humiliated her in front of other officers inside the jail. On June 21, the victim girl allegedly eloped with her boyfriend, but they were caught by the police and taken to Ghograpar police station. They were both put in jail that evening. Biman Roy has been dismissed from the Assam Police with immediate effect after he was accused of taking nude photographs of a girl inside the station. The dismissal was confirmed by Assam Police’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh in a midnight tweet. Recently another incident has come to light that the infamous Ghograpar PS OC Biman Roy was detained in May 2017 by the Vigilance Directorate and Anti-Corruption Cell on suspicion of corruption. According to reports, Biman Roy was accused of demanding Rs. 50,000 bribe.
