Assam Police foils two attempts to smuggle cattle
Guwahati (IANS). Continuing its drive against livestock smuggling in the state, the Assam Police foiled two attempts of cow smuggling in Guwahati and rescued 112 cattle. Officials gave this information on Monday.
The police have also arrested four people on the charges of cattle smuggling.
In the first incident, the city police stopped two vehicles carrying 62 cattle during an operation at Khetri.
A senior police officer said the vehicles were on their way to Meghalaya from Silapathar.
The police detained two suspects, Abdul Kalam and Meredul Islam, in connection with the incident, while two others managed to escape.
In another incident, city police in Jorabat stopped a truck that was carrying at least 48 cows.
According to the police, the vehicle was going from Lakhimpur to Burnihat.
Two men, originally from South India, have been arrested on charges of cattle smuggling.
They have been identified as Ramesh and Mani.
Guwahati City Police wrote on Twitter, “City Police foiled two attempts of cattle smuggling by intercepting three trucks from Khetri PS and Jorabat OP. A total of 112 cattle were seized and three smugglers were arrested. Legal action has been initiated.”
