Assam Zoo takes precautionary measures to keep animals warm during winter

Guwahati: Paying special attention to keeping the animals comfortable throughout the winter season, the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden authorities have taken precautionary measures to keep the animals warm during the cold season.

The zoo authority has installed heaters, used straw and blankets and arranged for high-powered electric bulbs to keep the animals and birds warm in the harsh winter at the State Zoo in Guwahati.

The zoo authority has installed heaters for tigers, lions as well as other large animals. Rajni Kanta Deka, chief animal conservator of Assam State Zoo, told ANI that all precautionary arrangements have been made for the animals at the state zoo to keep them warm during the winter season.

“We are using heaters for all cat family animals like lion, tiger, leopard, black panther. We have installed heaters in the animal enclosures to keep the animals warm during winter. We installed these heaters 20 days ago. We have used paddy straw for other animals like bears and deer,” said Rajni Kanta Deka. We have also used smaller blankets for other small animals.”
At the same time, Chief Conservator of the State Zoo, Prabin Haloi said that, during the winter season, we have installed heaters for the animals in their enclosures.

Prabin Haloi said, “Besides, we have used tarpaulin and also used paddy stalks to cover the animals. We have also installed heaters in the enclosures of the newborn baby giraffe and the kangaroo.” Rahmat Ali, another animal keeper at the zoo, said that they start the heaters in the animal enclosures every day around 5 pm and turn off the heaters around 5-6 am in the morning.

If the temperature drops too low, some animals in the zoo remain in their indoor spaces for their health and safety. Some species also have other limitations such as the influence of wind or snow in their habitat that may affect access.
