ATM tampering gang busted, 6 arrested
Mumbai: With the arrest of six history-sheeters, an inter-state gang involved in stealing money by tampering with ATMs has been busted. Kurar police station senior inspector Shashikant Jagdale said the accused, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, lived together in Airoli and were named in 11 similar crimes registered in Prayagraj.
Explaining their modus operandi, the senior inspector said they covered the cash dispenser with tape because the money would get stuck. When the confused customer left the ATM, they removed the tape and collected the cash.
A person lodged a complaint with the police after not receiving cash.
On December 21, a man tried to withdraw Rs 2,000 from an HDFC ATM near Shivalaya Temple in Malad East. The amount was debited from the machine; However, it did not distribute the cash, following which the victim lodged a police complaint. Subsequently, the police scanned the CCTV footage of the spot and spotted a suspicious auto-rickshaw with registration number MH04HJ1405.
Police have seized 10 ATM cards from the accused
The vehicle was seen moving towards Appapada and accordingly it was stopped at the rickshaw stand. All the accused are Ramu Ram alias Aditya Bharia, 29; Suraj Tiwari, 22; Sandeep Kumar Yadav, 24; Ashok Yadav, 36; Rakesh Kumar Yadav, 40; And 31 year old Ravikumar Yadav was present in the auto. Police seized 10 ATM cards of various banks, a rickshaw, Rs 2,000 in cash, 27 tapes, 25 adhesive pouches and plastic strips from them.
Inspector Jagdale said, “The accused have confessed to committing similar crimes in Andheri, Oshiwara, Mumbra and Samta Nagar areas.”
