Australia have best chance to win ODI World Cup: Mike Hussey
Dubai (IANS) Australian cricket great Mike Hussey believes the current 50-over side has a great chance of winning the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup to be held in India this year, citing the long haul of the current set of players. Long cited the positive factor of playing together.
Hussey won the 2007 Men’s ODI World Cup with Australia in the West Indies and played a major role in helping England win their maiden Men’s T20 World Cup title the previous year as a member of their coaching setup. Australia reached the semi-finals of the 2019 Men’s ODI World Cup, where they lost to eventual champions England.
The ICC quoted Hussey as saying, “I think Australia have a good chance because they have put together a great group of players for a while. They all know their roles very well and they have got to play their part.” There has also been some consistency in the team. I think they are trying a few different things.
He cited Australia’s legendary record of winning the ODI World Cup trophy five times as well as their 2-1 series win over India in March this year.
“He did well in the series against India (in March) in Indian conditions and that will give him a lot of confidence going into the World Cup,” Hussey said.
“And Australia have a great history in World Cup events. So, I know they will be determined to do very well. There are a lot of great teams out there. It’s hard to pick favourites, but I think Australia are the best,” he added. Will give himself a big chance.”
Hussey commented that he expected leg-spinner Adam Zampa and pace all-rounder Mitchell Marsh to play key roles for Australia on subcontinental pitches during the Men’s ODI World Cup in India.
“Adam Zampa can play a big role for Australia throughout the tournament. He’s been really good over the years. And I think Mitch Marsh is someone who can definitely make a big impact. Let him bat He is playing in the top three now and he is playing with a lot of confidence. So, if his confidence goes up, it can be really difficult to stop him.”
Hussey concluded by saying that all members of the Australian team have significant contributions to make during the tournament, which runs from October 5 to November 19. “You can’t rely on just one of the two key players to win the World Cup and it will take a collective effort,” Hussey said.
