Guwahati: A Senior Section Engineer (SSE) from the Carriage and Wagon Department of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Silchar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on June 14 in an alleged bribery case.
The arrest followed a complaint from a contractor, who alleged that the railway official had demanded an illegal payment in exchange for clearing a pending bill of approximately ₹20 lakh for work that had already been completed.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI registered a case on June 13 and launched a trap operation. During the operation, the engineer was allegedly caught accepting ₹20,000 from the contractor. Investigators stated that this amount represented one percent of the outstanding bill and was allegedly demanded as a condition for processing the payment.
According to the agency, the official had insisted on receiving a portion of the bill amount before initiating the process to clear the contractor’s dues.
Following his arrest, the accused was to be produced before the relevant court in Guwahati. As part of the investigation, CBI teams also conducted a search at the engineer’s residence to gather further evidence.
The agency stated that the investigation is ongoing and further questioning is being conducted to ascertain full details of the case.
