Bengal Governor visits violence-affected Bhangar, talks to people

Kolkata (IANS) | West Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose on Friday visited Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, which has been the epicenter of ongoing violence in the state ahead of the July 8 panchayat elections. Just an hour before the governor reached the violence-hit area, the police recovered seven bags full of crude bombs.

However, when the governor reached the spot, none of the top police officers from the district or the state were there.

The governor was informed about the situation by a junior officer of the rank of sub-inspector of police.

Bose first reached the Block Development Office of Bhangar Block-2, which was the epicenter of Thursday’s clashes in which three people were killed.

He was seen interacting with the local people. People told him about the situation prevailing in the area for the last few days.

Earlier, the governor had issued a strongly worded statement condemning the rampant violence that had taken place during the nomination phase since the first day of nominations on June 9.

Of the five deaths in election violence, three have been reported from Bhangar and two from Murshidabad district.

The governor had said, this game of ‘devil’ should end, it will end. The beginning of the end will be in West Bengal.

In response to this, Trinamool Congress state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that such remarks of the Governor based on a few isolated incidents are completely inappropriate.

Ghosh said, on what basis does the Governor say such things? He never speaks about the situations in Manipur and Uttar Pradesh. Even though he is the Governor of West Bengal, he as an Indian citizen could have issued a Twitter message on the situation there.
