Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s first rotary flyover near Sir MV Terminal gets approval
Bengaluru: The way has finally been cleared for the construction of the city’s first rotary flyover at the IOC junction near Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal, Byappanahalli. On Thursday, the state Cabinet approved the project aimed at providing seamless access to the luxurious terminal connecting important roads in and around Byappanahalli area of eastern Bengaluru.
This project is estimated to cost Rs 263 crore. The flyover will be 1.5 km long and a two-lane railway overbridge (ROB) will also be built along with it. It is one of the major road projects of the city sanctioned by the Congress government.
BBMP engineer-in-chief BS Prahlad told TOI that a rotary flyover is required due to the presence of operational railway tracks and lack of space.
“A comprehensive plan has been prepared to integrate the major roads of the area. At IOC Junction, due to the presence of multiple rail lines we are not in a position to create road infrastructure at grade level, and a rotary flyover is the most suitable option for us. This type of infrastructure can be seen in Chennai,” he said.
As per the proposal, road infrastructure will be constructed from ITC Limited (towards Fraser Town) to IOC Junction. The rotary flyover will provide access to the roads leading to the terminal and Old Madras Road. Motorists coming from Kammanahalli and Banswadi will also get access to the flyover.
“Motorists coming from all directions will be able to use the flyover and travel in any direction they wish. The road infrastructure will also provide seamless access to Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal,” the official explained.
BBMP is also proposing to build an ROB connecting Old Madras Road to the terminal. “An ROB connecting Old Madras Road to the terminal is already functional. Keeping in mind the future demands, another ROB is proposed next to the existing structure to help reduce traffic congestion on the Indiranagar side,” the official said.
South Western Railways (SWR) opened the Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal in June 2022. It is the first luxurious ‘airport-like’ terminal developed by the Railways with a centralized air-conditioning system. Although the infrastructure was ready in 2021, the absence of good road network forced authorities to delay commercial operations.
Currently, the terminal has a footfall of 22,000 per day and around 50 trains operate from here.
