Bengaluru: Historic Cantonment Railway Station to become world class by October 2025
Bengaluru: Renovation work of the city’s historical and heritage “Train Station Cantonment” is in full progress and 15% work has been completed. By October 2025, passengers will get first class services at the station.
Cantonment train station is one of the three main stations serving suburban and long distance trains and is the oldest railway station in the South Western Railway division. In this context, the Central Government has conceived a renovation project at a cost of Rs 480 crore to give the station a modern look and provide first-class facilities to the passengers.
The project is an important step towards improving the city’s transportation infrastructure. Preserving the original heritage style of the station, the modern station will provide world-class amenities to passengers in the years to come. It will also contribute to the development of Bengaluru.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the project on June 20, 2022. He has suggested to complete the work by 2025. An additional 75,000 square meters will be constructed. Pai is adding 25,000 square meters of space. Pai Station offers a total area of 1 lakh square meters to provide world class tourist services.
The work started about 6 months ago and has achieved physical progress of 15% and financial progress of Rs 35 million. The engineers were confident that the work would be completed on time. While making the main entry towards Vasantnagar and second entry towards Millers Road, separate ticket kiosks will be opened on both sides to facilitate the entry of passengers. It will have a large waiting room, several booths, rain water harvesting, solar power roof, a four-legged bridge and a parking complex of several floors.
It is building a parking complex of several plants with a capacity of 2,000 vehicles for parking bicycles and cars. With operations of over 100 trains per day and over 50 million passengers, the station will transform into an important transportation hub by integrating three railway networks, connecting the existing railway network with the nearby train suburb project and the nearby metro station. The work of the station is going on at a good pace. At present, 15 percent of its work has been completed at a cost of Rs 35 crore. Out of 24 meter vial work, 20 meter work has been completed. The cementing work of the building on the side of the station is nearing completion. An engineer said the foundation for the construction of the CAO complex and four pedestrian bridges has been completed and the previously mentioned works are starting.
