BESS helps Singareni save ₹26 lakh from surplus solar

Hyderabad: Singareni Collieries Company Limited is reaping the benefits of solar power by harnessing the experimental battery energy storage system (BESS), which stores surplus energy produced at the Mandamarri solar complex. The Singareni battery unit — the first and largest BESS project in Telangana — was set up under state government directions. It stores surplus daytime solar generation in batteries instead of supplying it free of cost to the grid, thereby allowing its utilisation when required.

In four months of operation, the BESS system stored 3,35,485 units of electricity and produced financial savings of Rs 25,66,460 for Singareni, as per officials of Singareni.

The experimental BESS was installed in January with an investment of Rs 2.5 crore — as an auxiliary facility to the 28 MW Mandamarri solar plant — on instructions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and energy minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu.
