Bethora: ‘No parking’ signs installed on accident-prone highway
Ponda: After much media coverage and persistent objections by locals, the authorities concerned have finally installed ‘No Parking’ signs along the accident-prone highway from Bethora to Bethakhol. After the dead body of a local man was found in a roadside pit in Kajarwada-Bethora, the local people had strongly protested against the parking of heavy vehicles on the roadside.
Keeping in mind the demands of the local people, Sarpanch Madhu Khandeparkar discussed the matter with PWD (road) engineers and resolved to install ‘No Parking’ signs on the dangerous stretch of the highway.
Locals have expressed relief at the action, but have also expressed uncertainty over whether truck owners will continue to follow the rules in the future. It may be recalled that the South Goa District Collector had passed an order banning parking of heavy vehicles on the bypass a few years ago but it was not implemented.
Along with PWD, the traffic police has also cooperated a lot to implement the order passed by the Collector.
There have been many fatal accidents on the road in the past and street lamps will soon be installed on the wide road,” said sarpanch Khandeparkar.
