Bid to promote Tasar sector in Jharkhand and neighboring Odisha

La Fundación Tata Steel, the Corporate Social Responsibility (RSC) arm of Tata Steel, has entered into an agreement with Instituto Central de Investigación y Capacitación Tasar (CTRTI), Ranchi, to promote sustainable means of living through activities based on sericulture. CTRTI, a unit of the Junta Central de la Seda (a statutory body dependent on the central textile ministry), claims to be the world’s only institute dedicated to research and development activities in the textile sector.

A statement issued by Tata Steel said, “The MOA was approved by CTRTI Director N.B. Choudhary and Tata Steel Foundation Executive Director Saurav Roy signed the agreement on Wednesday at the institute’s campus in Ranchi.”

“As part of this, both the entities will jointly collaborate to provide technical assistance and training to the farming communities and enrich their knowledge on adopting an improved package of practices that includes management of host plants and pest larvae to control diseases. Management is involved. , SEDA, Integrated Conservation and Management of Land. Management and assistance in obtaining necessary certifications, if necessary”, the release said.

DESIA: “The main objective of the Knowledge Consortium is to expand support to activities based on sericulture to enable and introduce effective technologies before and after bud for the conservation of Sukinda ecorace”.

It is noteworthy that Sukinda ecorace is one of the few species of autochthonous silkworm and hundreds of farmers in Jajpur region of Odisha are dependent on Sukinda ecorace silk cultivation for their livelihood.

In 2016, Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chromite Mines, located in Sukinda block of Jajpur district of Odisha, had offered to take measures for the conservation of the Gusano species of Sukinda ecorace.

“Through this association, we aim to allow access to integral training and orientation to the underprivileged communities, thereby reviving the sericulture sector in the areas of Harichandampur, Sukinda and Danagadi and Seda Tasar. The main objective behind this collaborative effort is to contribute to the conservation of Sukinda ecology. Saurav Roy said, It is our great pleasure to associate with Central Institute of Investigation and Capacitance Tasar and we look forward to the results of our collaboration.

Based on this agreement, CTRTI and Tata Steel Foundation plan to conduct six training sessions in a year to reach 160 households.
