New Delhi: The situation has once again worsened in the northeastern state Manipur. The government has declared the entire state as a ‘disturbed area’. In view of the tense situation, internet has also been banned. After the reduction in incidents of violence, the government recently restored mobile internet services on 23 September.
According to the notification issued today by the Manipur Home Department, the Governor is of the opinion that due to the violent activities of various extremist groups, there is a need for armed forces to assist the civil administration throughout Manipur. These also include Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamasang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamalai, Irilbung, Limakhong, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching and Jiribam. However, there is peace in 19 police stations of the state, which have been kept out of the disturbed areas.
In fact, after the death of two missing students in the state, the situation has started becoming tense again. Students have come out on violent protests in Imphal city and other areas of the valley. There have been no major incidents of violence, but the situation still remains tense in Manipur. There was a lot of commotion and demonstration on the streets of Imphal on Wednesday night also.
As soon as internet services were restored, many videos of violence and such information started going viral on social media, many of which, according to the government, were misleading and attempts were being made to spread rumours.
The situation in the valley worsened once again after the picture of two missing students from Manipur and the news of their death surfaced on social media. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Manipur MLAs have written a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah demanding a CBI investigation into this matter as well. Immediately after the letter, the Central Government came into action and on Thursday morning the entire team headed towards Imphal under the leadership of senior CBI officials. Investigation of many cases of violence and sexual violence in Manipur has been handed over to CBI.
While the students are on the streets after the death of the girl students and are demanding an investigation, the Kuki community organization ITLF has also welcomed the CBI investigation. To stop rumours, the government has once again issued an order to ban mobile internet from 26th September.
Security agencies are conducting operations at various places and trying to stop the violence. In Manipur, incidents of illegal weapons being used by different organizations are continuously coming to light and recently, Chief Minister N Virendra Singh had appealed to all the people to surrender illegal weapons in the next 15 days otherwise 15 Days later, a large scale search and combing campaign will be conducted.
