Cabinet nod for two 800 MW Obra D power plants in UP

Lucknow (IANS). The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has started efforts to provide cheap electricity to the consumers in the state. In this sequence, it has been decided to set up two 800 MW power plants named Obra D in Sonbhadra, in which the UP government and NTPC will have a 50-50 stake.

In the cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of CM Yogi at Lok Bhavan on Tuesday, approval was granted to 2 thermal projects of 800-800 MW ‘Obra D’ at Obra in Sonbhadra at a cost of about 18 thousand crores. These projects will be executed in 50-50 partnership with NTPC. In this, 30 percent equity will be given, while 70 percent amount will be arranged from financial institutions.

The special thing will be that this will be the first ultra super critical unit of the state. Such a plant has not been built in the state. The technology of this type of plant is advanced, their efficiency is very high and the consumption of coal is also very less. Due to this the cost also comes down. Surely the consumers will get its benefit.

Giving information about the decisions of the Council of Ministers, Urban Development and Energy Minister AK Sharma said that the consumption of electricity is increasing and we believe that it will continue to increase day by day. During the Global Investors Summit, we had signed an agreement with NTPC to set up a thermal plant at Obra. Under this agreement, the State Government and NTPC have decided to start the plant, which has also been approved by the Council of Ministers. This plant will be built on about 500 acres of land and if further land is needed, arrangements will be made for that too. The first unit is targeted to be ready in 50 months and the second unit in 56 months.

The Energy Minister told that our capacity in the thermal sector is 7000 MW and these two plants are going to be almost a quarter of it. We hope that this plant can become an energy hub not only of the state but of the entire country. The good thing is that there are coal mines NCL nearby, from where these plants will get coal. Along with the consumption of coal, there will be considerable savings due to less expenditure in transportation of coal. At present, we buy power at Rs 5.50 per unit, whereas with this plant we will be able to buy power at Rs 4.79 per unit. We will be able to provide Re 1 per unit cheap electricity to the consumers.
