Case against K.C. Veeramani: Dismissed with a fine of Rs 1 lakh

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai High Court has dismissed the case against former AIADMK minister K.C. Veeramani with a fine of ₹1 lakh.
Ramamurthy, a resident of Vellore, filed a petition in the Chennai High Court, alleging that former AIADMK minister K.C. Veeramani contested and lost the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Jolarpettai constituency. He concealed and provided false information about his assets in his nomination papers.
I filed a complaint with the Election Commission regarding this matter. The Election Commission investigated the complaint and ordered the Income Tax Department to investigate K.C. Veeramani’s income and assets and file a report. Accordingly, the Income Tax Department investigated the details and filed a report stating that there were discrepancies of ₹14 crore in the details filed by Veeramani.
Subsequently, the Election Officer filed a case against Veeramani in the Tirupattur District Court for providing false information on the nomination papers. The case is pending. The Income Tax Department has not fully investigated Veeramani’s income and asset details. Therefore, they argued that the Income Tax Department should be ordered to re-investigate and file a final report.
The case came up for hearing on Thursday before a bench comprising Chief Justice M.M. Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan. The judges hearing the case stated that the Election Commission had filed the case against K.C. Veeramani based on the Income Tax Department’s report. The petitioner was planning to misuse the High Court for political purposes during the elections. Therefore, they ruled that this could not be permitted and ordered the petition dismissed with a fine of ₹1 lakh.
