Cauvery dispute: CM Siddaramaiah said – discussion with Jal Shakti Minister Shekhawat was fruitful
New Delhi (IANS). Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday said that talks with Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat regarding the Cauvery dispute were fruitful.
A joint statement has been given by both the leaders in this regard. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while addressing a press conference, said that he held a meeting with Union Minister Shekhawat on Cauvery river water sharing. Told the Union Minister about the current situation in the state.
The Union Minister’s response was positive. The matter is going to come to the Supreme Court. We are confident that the Supreme Court will accept Karnataka’s petition and issue a stay order on the direction of the Cauvery Water Management Committee (CWMC) to release water to Tamil Nadu.
The CM further said that we are waiting for the order of the Supreme Court in this regard and later we will discuss other measures. We have sought time to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, if we get time we will meet him also. We will demand talks with the concerned states.
Union Minister Shekhawat was briefed about the requirement of 106 TMC water for crops, industries and drinking water security in the state. It is also reported that only 51 TMC of water is available in all the four reservoirs.
We have drawn the attention of the Union Minister to the lowest rainfall in the state in 123 years and no inflow of water during the months of August and September. He was also briefed about the availability of water by various organizations and farmers protesting and releasing water to Tamil Nadu.
Our legal team is trying to explain the crisis situation to the Supreme Court. The flow of four reservoirs of the state has reduced from 11 to 8 cusecs.
