Central team assesses damage caused by floods in Tirunelveli district
CHENNAI: An inter-ministerial central team visited flooded areas in Tirunelveli district on Thursday to assess the extent of damage caused by torrential rains in four southern districts of Tamil Nadu on December 17 and 18. The team led by KP Singh, advisor, National Disaster Management Authority (Operations and Communications), visited the water-logged area at Tirunelveli Junction bus stand and interacted with officials.
During the team’s interaction with affected residents, a victim of a house collapse became emotional while narrating his horrific experience and fell at Singh’s feet pleading for help. Singh stopped the crying woman from touching his feet and assured her of proper financial assistance. According to Tirunelveli District Collector KP Karthikeyan, the administration shifted around 696 pregnant women to safer places as a precautionary measure ahead of the rains.
142 people were admitted to various hospitals and among them, 91 pregnant women, including 14 in primary health centre, 13 in government hospital, 21 in Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and 43 in private hospitals, delivered babies in the last two days. He said drinking water is being supplied through tankers to Kuniyoor village, where drinking water infrastructure has been affected due to flooding in the Tamirabarani river. He urged the public to boil water and cool it before drinking.
