Tamil Nadu: Orange alert for Nilgiris, Erode and Coimbatore districts today

Tamil Nadu: An orange alert has been issued for the Nilgiris, Erode, and Coimbatore districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday (December 3) as very heavy rainfall is expected.
The Chennai Meteorological Department issued a press release on Tuesday: Cyclone ‘Tithwa’, which formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Sri Lanka-Indian Ocean, caused heavy rainfall in various parts of Tamil Nadu. The storm weakened into a deep depression and lay over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal-north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-south Andhra Pradesh coasts. Later, it slowly moved northward and weakened further into a depression on Tuesday morning.
Later, at 8:30 am, it was about 40 km east-southeast of Chennai, 120 km northeast of Puducherry, 140 km northeast of Cuddalore, and about 190 km south-southeast of Nellore. At that time, the minimum distance from the center of the depression to the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast was 25 km.
It slowly moved southwestward toward the Puducherry coast of North Tamil Nadu and persisted until Tuesday evening. It is expected to weaken further into a deep depression by Wednesday morning (December 3).
As a result, light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected at many places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Wednesday (December 3) to December 8. An orange alert has been issued for these districts as one or two very heavy rains are likely in the Nilgiris, Erode, and Coimbatore districts, and a yellow alert has been issued for these districts as one or two heavy rains are likely in Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Salem, and Namakkal districts.
Chennai… Partly cloudy skies will prevail over Chennai and its surrounding areas on Wednesday (December 3). Light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in some parts of the city.

Fishermen’s Warning: Cyclonic winds with speed reaching 55 kmph are expected along and off North Tamil Nadu-Pudu Coast from Wednesday (3rd December) morning. It is likely to blow along and off South Tamil Nadu Coast, Kumari Sagar and Gulf of Mannar, and South Andhra Coast, Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Central West Bengal.
