Children used to smuggle ganja, women arrested

Agartala: In a major drug bust, officials seized 12 kg of ganja from a group of seven women who were using their infants as unsecured carriers. The incident unfolded at an interstate bus terminal in Tripura, a police official said on Tuesday.

North Tripura district superintendent of police Bhanu Pad Chakraborty confirmed that the arrests took place on Monday evening after police caught hold of the individuals. Acting on specific information, a police team immediately responded to the Dharmanagar Interstate Bus Terminal in North Tripura district. There, he encountered a group of women, all originally from Bihar, wandering aimlessly with six small children.

According to Chakraborty, these women had reached Tripura by train and were attempting to reach their distant destination in Bihar by road. The suspects and their children were then taken to Dharmanagar police station, where they were thoroughly searched. During inspection, a shocking 12 kg of contraband was found hidden within his undergarments.

Furthermore, it was also revealed that an additional four to five kilograms of ganja was hidden on the bodies of the infants. This shocking discovery reflects a new strategy adopted by ganja smugglers to exploit innocent children in their illegal activities. The children involved in this case were aged between six months and one and a half years, which underlines the lengths to which these traffickers are willing to go to avoid authorities.

All seven women were charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and later sent to judicial custody when they appeared in a local court. Given the young age of the infants, the mothers were allowed to take them to a detention facility. This shocking incident is a reminder of how far some criminals will stoop in their illegal endeavours.
