Maharashtra: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the Mumbai premiere of the documentary film “Pandharpur Wari and the Footprints of the Saint,” based on Maharashtra’s famous religious tradition, the Pandharpur Wari. On this occasion, he recalled Maharashtra’s saint tradition, Warkari culture, and the faith of millions of devotees in Lord Vitthal, describing the Wari as the spiritual and cultural identity of the state.
The Wari Yatra, held annually in the temple town of Pandharpur in Solapur district, is one of the largest religious pilgrimages in Maharashtra. On the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi, millions of Warkaris travel on foot to Pandharpur to seek the darshan of Lord Vitthal. This Yatra is not just a religious event, but is considered a symbol of Maharashtra’s social, cultural, and spiritual traditions.
Every year, during the months of Jyeshtha and Ashadha, all of Maharashtra is immersed in the devotion of Lord Vitthal. As the palanquins of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj move along their designated routes towards Pandharpur, thousands and lakhs of devotees join them. Bhajans, kirtans, and abhangas echo throughout the route.

The most significant feature of the Wari is that the devotees participating in it travel long distances on foot. Many Warkaris travel for several days to reach Pandharpur. Arrangements for food, water, and rest are made for the devotees at various points along the way. This journey also exemplifies the spirit of service and cooperation.
The makers of the documentary stated that through the film, they attempt to introduce the world to this unique tradition of Maharashtra. Their aim is not only to showcase the religious aspect, but also to highlight the social and human values behind the Wari.
Attendees at the event said that in modern times, when people are increasingly moving towards a digital lifestyle, traditions like the Wari serve to connect people with their culture and roots. This journey provides spiritual peace as well as social connection.
