Assam: DC given special powers to take immediate action against illegal entrants

Guwahati: The Assam government has launched a new, faster system that allows deputy commissioners to directly order deportations within 24 hours of receiving specific complaints, completely bypassing the tribunal system.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the move while discussing the ongoing eviction drive in the state.
Sarma said, “Now the government has introduced a new facility. If a specific complaint is received, there is no longer a need for a tribunal. The deputy commissioner can take action directly and deport the person from the country within 24 hours.”
He appealed to citizens to report such cases directly to the deputy commissioner.
This announcement comes amid a massive land recovery operation in the state. Sarma said that the government has so far recovered 1.6 lakh bighas of land out of a total of 12 lakh bighas, which is under investigation.
“Many people have been rescued, but many more remain. This process will continue,” he said, adding that the eviction operation is currently underway in Hojai and will be expanded district by district. Sarma said the government will continue the eviction process without pause, while officials will identify and deport those who entered illegally.
He described these measures as essential to ensure safety, security, and the rule of law in the state.
The Chief Minister said the operation will proceed in phases as officials systematically cover all districts.
