Congress protests in Tamil Nadu, questions raised on Governor over Thaveka support and government formation

Tamil Nadu: Amidst the political turmoil in Tamil Nadu, the Congress party has clarified its position in support of Thaveka and vowed to continue the movement. Tamil Nadu Congress President Girish Chodankar stated that the party will continue its struggle in support of Thaveka and will not back down at any level.
On Friday, a protest was held in Chennai under the leadership of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. Selvaperundhagai. The protest urged the Governor to invite Thaveka leader Vijay to proceed with the government formation process. Several senior Congress leaders and workers participated in the event.
Speaking to the media during the protest, Girish Chodankar stated that the TDP has emerged as the largest party in the state based on the people’s decision. He said that the Governor should immediately invite TDP leader Vijay to form the government. Chodankar also alleged that the Governor’s condition of requiring the support of 118 MLAs is unfair.
He said that according to the Constitution, MLAs have to prove their majority in the Assembly, not in person before the Governor. He described this process as anti-democratic and said that the Congress would continue its fight in support of the TDP on this issue.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. Selvaperundhagai also made serious allegations against the central government. He said that the BJP government at the Centre is interfering in the functioning of state governments through the Governor. According to him, the Centre’s aim is to maintain control over the states through the Governors, which is against the federal structure.
He also said that attempts are being made to prevent democratically elected governments from functioning. Congress leaders alleged that the Governor’s role is being politically influenced, disrupting the government formation process in the state.
During the protest, the leaders also claimed that the TDP won the 2026 Assembly elections as the largest party, but the Governor is delaying the formation of the government. Congress leaders say this is against the principles of the Constitution and weakens democracy.
This entire development has further heightened tensions in Tamil Nadu politics. Debates have intensified among various parties over government formation, majority, and the role of the Governor. Political analysts believe this issue is likely to escalate in the coming days.
