Tamil Nadu: Student strike in government schools from tomorrow

Tamil Nadu: Student registration for the upcoming academic year (2025-2026) in government schools will begin on Monday (March 2).

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department operates 37,554 government schools, enrolling approximately 5.2 million students. It has been customary for government schools to begin student registration the day schools reopen in June after the summer holidays.

To increase student enrollment, student enrollment has been advanced since 2024, beginning in March. This has been well received by parents. Student enrollment for the next academic year (2026-2027) will begin on Monday (March 2). Necessary preparations have been made in schools for this purpose. Steps have also been taken to enroll children over the age of 5 in Anganwadi centers located in nearby government schools to complete their preschool education.

Similarly, several guidelines have been issued, including raising awareness among parents about the Tamil Nadu government’s welfare schemes and scholarships and taking steps to address student absenteeism. Student absenteeism rates should be significantly reduced in all government schools. Furthermore, the School Education Department has directed school headmistresses to conduct awareness activities regarding student absenteeism.
