Darrang’s youth is earning lakhs from saffron cultivation
Palampur. K Samu, a 23-year-old youth from Ghaneta Darang village of Palampur has set a new example in the area by cultivating real saffron. 23 year old Samu has become the first person to cultivate saffron in Himachal. The surprising thing is that saffron has not been cultivated in soil, but by maintaining the temperature in a room. This saffron is being sold for Rs 5 lakh per kg. This farmer has earned two and a half lakh rupees by selling half a kilo of saffron. This is the first example of saffron cultivation in Himachal under Aeroconic technology. Samu told that since childhood, his passion for doing something different attracted him towards saffron cultivation.
After taking proper training in saffron cultivation, he has set up a unit in his native village Ghaneta, where saffron is being produced in large quantities. This Mogra variety of saffron is mostly grown in Kashmir. Samu says that he is growing real saffron, which is not sprayed with pesticides. They claim that this is the best quality organic saffron. Many types of medicines are made from this pure saffron, while this organic saffron is very beneficial for skin diseases and eyesight. Saffron cultivation starts giving crop in a period of about three months. Samu has also appealed to the state government to strengthen the economy of farmers by promoting saffron cultivation. Marketing facilities of saffron should be made available to the farmers.
