Meena stated that the situation was particularly bad in areas such as Tambaram and Avadi and said that more than 8,275 people had been rescued and transferred to camps of distress.

When asked about a huge lake in Narayanapuram that had opened up and flooded the south of Chennai, he said that they had deployed boats in those areas and where necessary in the neighboring districts to shift the people to safer places. In the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, 825 of the 900 points of sale of petrol and diesel have started functioning, he added. The mobile services are also regressing, depending on the electric supply in their respective areas, said Meena.

Although electricity supply in Chennai was restored in phases on Tuesday after the rain stopped, more rain is expected. The state government declared Wednesday holidays for universities and schools.
