Death toll from cyclone in Brazil rises to 47

Sao Paulo: The death toll from an extratropical cyclone in Brazil’s south-eastern state of Rio Grande do Sul has risen to 47. Officials have given this information The cyclone has devastated 98 municipalities and flooded the Taquari River, leading to the evacuation of more than 25,000 people since September 4, Xinhua news agency quoted Rio Grande do Sul’s civil defense as saying. At least 925 people have been injured.
Rio Grande do Sul’s deputy governor, Gabriel Souza, said eight people were still missing as of Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Brazilian government launched a package of economic and reconstruction aid for the affected region, as Rio Grande do Sul remains under new cyclone alert this week.
