Delhi High Court grants bail to thug Sukesh Chandrasekhar’s aide
New Delhi (IANS). Pooja Singh, a close aide of thug Sukesh Chandrasekhar, has been granted bail by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. Pooja Singh is accused of assisting Chandrashekhar during his stay in Tihar Jail through a contractual nursing staff and promoting an extortion racket from inside the jail.
Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma said that Singh is a young woman in the age group of 25 to 26 years and the Enforcement Directorate has not accused her of taking financial advantage.
The court also recognized the possibility that a young person with an immature mind could be swayed by Chandrasekhar’s tactics.
The court said that the mere contention that Singh was promised a reward is not sufficient to conclude that he has committed an offense under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
It said that people of his age may be led astray by the allure of money, adding that the circumstances of each case are unique.
“People of such a young age sometimes go astray to get easy money,” the court said.
Singh’s alleged involvement included procuring luxury items for Chandrashekhar and Leena Maria Paul, which were allegedly delivered to Tihar Jail through him.
He was also accused of making payments to various persons on the instructions of Chandrasekhar.
The ED argued that Singh was well aware of the activities being carried out by her and the nature of the work which led her to indulge in money laundering.
However, Singh’s defense was that he acted within the confines of a master-servant relationship. He insisted that the agency has seized all relevant evidence, eliminating the possibility of tampering.
Taking into account the overall circumstances and Singh’s age, the court concluded that he should be granted bail.
He has been directed to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and the like amount as surety to the satisfaction of the trial court.
