Due to police ‘lapse’, man spent 10 days in jail, then…
Kanpur: A ‘lapse’ by the Ghatampur police in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district led to a man spending ten days in jail. A non-bailable warrant was issued against Pramod Sankhwar, who was earlier arrested in 2021 for illegal gun possession. But this warrant was given to Pramod Sahu, a resident of Vasant Vihar area of the city.
Sahu, who was jailed even after producing documents proving that he was not the person the police were looking for, was granted bail on September 22 after 10 days in jail. Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Anand Prakash Tiwari assured strict action against the guilty officials.
JCP said, “This is very serious. Ghatampur ACP has started investigation and based on the investigation report, action will be taken against the policemen.”
After his arrest in 2021, Durga Prasad’s son Sankhwar was out on bail. He failed to appear in the court, following which a non-bailable warrant was issued against him by the Civil Judge, Junior Division, on August 24 this year, officials said. However, the warrant sent for Sankhwar was mistakenly given to Sahu, whose only fault was that his first name was the same as that of the accused and they both had the same father’s name.
Sahu said, “I kept pleading with him, even showed him my identity cards, but to no avail. The policemen told Sahu that his name was Pramod Kumar, his father had died and he beat his wife, whom they identified as Usha.”
Sahu claimed his innocence. He said, “My father Durga Prasad Sahu is alive, and my wife lives with me, and her name is not Usha.” Nevertheless, police officers wrongly accused him of that crime. The case has attracted considerable public attention, leading Sahu to appear before Commissioner RK Swarnkar, leading to the initiation of an official investigation into the incident.
