Fake Job: Former Indigo employee cheated of Rs 50 lakh, arrested
New Delhi: A former employee of Indigo Airlines has been arrested for defrauding a family of Rs 50 lakh in the national capital in the name of getting them a job in the airline.
The accused has been identified as Ishu Verma alias Rahul Saxena, who allegedly targeted the family when their daughter posted her job search profile on a job search engine’s app in June 2023.
Verma, calling himself “Ayan Malik” contacted the woman and offered her a receptionist position at IndiGo. They then conducted a series of online interviews, which resulted in a fake offer letter with a starting salary of Rs 28,000 per month. To further convince the family, Verma introduced another associate, “Sanjay Bangar”, who similarly offered the son a job and provided a forged joining letter.
According to DCP Shahdara Rohit Meena, on December 31, the complainant Shammi Mehra, 48 years old, resident of Jagat Puri, Delhi, told that she has two children Tisha and Nitin Mehra. In June 2023, his daughter Tisha created her profile on the app to search for jobs. His daughter was contacted on her mobile and offered a job as a receptionist on the search engine’s app.
Cheated by an elaborate scheme, the family paid Verma Rs 50 lakh in installments over several months.
However, after verification, the joining letters were found to be fake, following which the family lodged a complaint at Jagat Puri police station.
A case was registered under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
During investigation, the police found out that Verma had also forged the joining letter, following which sections 468 (forgery) and 471 (using forged documents) were added to the charges.
“On later verifying the job letters, the complainant found them to be fake. “On the complaint of complainant Shammi Mehra, a case under section 420/406/34 of IPC was registered at PS Jagat Puri, Delhi and investigation initiated.” Police said.
“During investigation, the joining letters which were provided to the victims by the accused were found to be fake and sections of forgery i.e. 468/471 IPC have also been added. Accused Ishu Verma alias Rahul Saxena, aged 29 years, was arrested in the above mentioned case; He was currently working with Indigo when he cheated the victim,” the police said.
The investigation revealed that he had invested the ill-gotten money in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and used a voice changer app to conceal his identity while interacting with the victims.
According to the police, accused Ishu Verma alias Rahul Saxena had studied MBA and was working as BMI (Body Mass Index) officer in Indigo Airlines. His father has died and he was living with his mother and elder brother, police said, adding that further investigation into the entire syndicate is underway.
More information is awaited.
