Farmers begin indefinite strike against Naina project

NAVI MUMBAI: Even as Panvel farmers have launched an indefinite strike from December 6 to protest against the implementation of the Navi Mumbai Airport Impact Notified Area (NANA) project, they have turned a blind eye to the state government and City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) officials. Angered by the inaction of the authorities, protesters blocked the Mumbai-Goa highway for 10 minutes on Monday to draw the attention of the machinery. The main demand of the protesters is to cancel the Naina project and allow them to keep 50 percent of the land for infrastructure development.

The project does not involve a land acquisition process, but proposes land pooling by villagers, wherein CIDCO, the special planning authority for the project, gets to keep 60 per cent of the land for infrastructure development, while the project affected people get the remaining 40 per cent. Leading the protest, former MLA Balram Patil said that CIDCO officials had come to the site where the protest was held. “However, he did not hold any discussion and said that the matter will be raised during a meeting between the CIDCO administration and the protesters on December 23,” Patil said.

‘We will ensure that there is no discrimination’

Saying that it is difficult to survive on farming alone, Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur said that farmers sold their land to builders due to lack of money. Thakur said, “The state government is for the overall development of farmers and we will ensure that there is no discrimination while carrying out infrastructural development in the Naina region.”

When contacted, a CIDCO official, on condition of anonymity, said, “A decision regarding the farmers’ demands will be taken by the state government after the winter session of the state legislature. We will meet the protesters on December 23 and hope to reach a favorable conclusion.”

Work on the project has been going on since 2013

Naina, the project which brings areas within 25 km radius of the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) under the administrative control of CIDCO, is spread over 371 sq km including 174 villages.

The Naina project has been facing public opposition since its inception in 2013. The villagers are opposing the plan of land pooling and want compensation, demanding the cancellation of the project. They had protested under the aegis of Naina Prakalpabandhit Shetkari Utkarsh Samiti which included a series of protests, bike rally and march to the ministry.

Saying that the project is destroying farmers, their farms and the environment, the agitators stood firm on their stand and said the protest against the project will continue until their demands are met.
